Car batteries in the Gulf: why two years is normal
Batteries rarely die in winter here. They die in summer, slowly, and then fail on the first cool morning. How to spot it early.
In Europe a car battery can last five or six years. In the UAE, two to three years is a good result. The reason is chemistry: high temperatures speed up corrosion inside the battery and evaporate the electrolyte.
Summer does the damage, winter shows it
Under the bonnet on a July afternoon, temperatures easily pass 70°C. The battery keeps working, so nothing seems wrong. Months later, on a cooler morning, the engine needs more current to start and the weakened battery cannot deliver it.
- The engine cranks slower than usual
- Headlights dim when you start the car
- The start-stop system stops working
- A white or green crust appears on the terminals
Test before it strands you
A digital tester measures cold cranking amps and internal resistance in a couple of minutes. It tells you whether the battery is healthy, weakening or already failing. We also check the alternator, because a tired alternator can kill a brand new battery.
